The advancement in rebreather technology for scuba diving has resulted in a growing market for recreational rebreather diving over the last ten years. Once used primarily by technical divers, rebreathers are now going more mainstream.
Rebreathers are closed-circuit breathing apparatuses that replace the need for divers to wear oxygen tanks while diving. Rebreathers work by recycling the unused oxygen contained in each breath by removing Carbon dioxide while adding fresh oxygen to replace the oxygen actually used by the diver (4% – 5% of air breathed in).
The Hollis Explorer Rebreather was neither a fully closed circuit Rebreather nor a pure semi-closed system, but an intelligent hybrid that utilizes the best of both worlds. Its compact, lightweight and extremely easy to use … it was designed for use as a recreational rebreather. Unfortunately it was discontuinued before it was able to fully reach its potential in this very thin market.
That being said, this diver was able to reserrect the use of his Hollis Rebreather by using a KISS rebreather conversion.
Watch the folloiwng clip that details how the Hollis conversion was done and what was involved.
