The Helmet Diving Experience [video]

While we all appreciate the technological advances in more traditional scuba diving, helmet diving has advanced as well.
As divers, we often take for granted the progress that has been made in the technology behind scuba diving. From the first form of diving in the 1800’s,helmet diving, and the early days of DIY scuba diving , amazing technical advances have definitely been made on both fronts.
Helmet diving offers an experience that many divers really never get to experience. It is traditionally used, even to this day, for commercial applications. The advances made in helmet diving are just as awesome, but there is limited access for most divers to have a helmet diving experience. Helmet diving is a completely different diving experience requiring a large support crew as well as the very heavy and cumbersome dive suit that requires surface air support.
In the following video Jonathan Bird takes us on a trip to New Jersey to give helmet diving a try at the Garden State Underwater Recovery Unit. This Unit still uses a Mark V occasionally for rescue operations.
