What Do Sharks Eat? Other Sharks Even Before Birth

When asked the question: What do sharks eat? rarely do we ever think about other sharks as the answer. Well as it turns out, sharks can be cannibals. They can even be embryonic cannibals.

The following clip of what appears to be a severely injured shark (half eaten) shark still hunting for prey has scientists a bit stunned.

Apparently, the shark was attacked in a cannibalistic attack by other sharks as it was being released. As the story goes this shark, an oceanic black tip, was being released by scientists into the sea off the coast of Mozambique. It was immediately mauled in a cannibalistic attack by other sharks.

Dr Lebrato, one of the scientific team members, acknowledged that it is well known that sharks eat other sharks, but that it is very difficult to document.

Professor Meekanm from the Australian Institute of Marine Science is quoted saying “It’s not just one rogue shark attacking other sharks or even one species of shark attacking other sharks. Its lots of different sharks turning on each other.”

The following clip is further proof that sharks eat their own as a food source. Theory is that this is occurring because of our attempts to keep sharks away from swimmers. Nets and bated hook lines result in hooked sharks sending out distress signals which are picked up by rival predators on the lookout for an easy meal.
