From Record Breaking Space Walks to Record Breaking Depths In The Ocean

Dr. Kathy Sullivan is the first U.S. Woman to walk in space and also dive to the deepest point in the ocean.
Kathy Sullivan is not only one of a handful of people that have reached Challenger Deep, but she is also the first woman to reach Challenger Deep. Add that to her record as the first U.S. woman to walk in space and you have a unique set of first achievements across the board.
So, in addition to Dr. Sullivan’s previous records, she is now the first woman to visit Challenger Deep.
Her mission to Challenger Deep took place on the DSV Limiting Factor with pilot Victor Vescovo of Caladan Oceanic was supported by EYOS Expeditions.
Kathy Sullivan had just completed her historic dive to become the first woman to reach the deepest point in the ocean and the first human to have been in space and at full ocean depth. In 1983, Dr Sullivan, a veteran of three space shuttle flights, became the first American woman to walk in space. She is the 8th person to reach the bottom of the Challenger Deep (The first two were Don Walsh and Jacques Picard in 1960. James Cameron also reached the bottom of Challenger Deep in 2012).
